Pussy willow branches are definitely a sign of early spring. For many people, they are a symbol of Easter or Chinese New Year.
I have always loved them because of their soft and fuzzy buds, which are called catkins. I am pretty sure the term catkin and the name pussy willow have a connection in history. When I was a kid, I used to like keep a few catkins in my pocket in springtime because they were nice to pet. (The similarity with a certain Steinbeck character is not unfamiliar to me.)
I know I keep promising springtime, but I’m just passing along the messages from our farmers and from Mother Nature. And from the catkins. And from my completely untrustworthy weather app that will redeem itself only if the weather climbs into the 50’s this week and stays there for a while.
