New Yorkers love their pumpkins and Indian corn
I have been taking pictures of all the beautiful pumpkins and gourds in the markets this season. They are an art medium for Halloween and decorative items throughout the fall until Thanksgiving, when they become tasty pies.
I did learn, however, that only sugar pumpkins should be used for making actual pies because they are plump and fleshy. Jack-o-lantern pumpkins are larger and more stringy and watery. And that explains why we always used a spoon instead of a fork to eat the delicious but mostly liquid pumpkin pies my dad would make at Thanksgiving with the pumpkins we’d carved for Halloween.
Happy Pumpkin Season!

And here’s my teensy pumpkin for the season. It’s not so much bigger than a quarter.
