One of my favorite markets opens this weekend – the Down to Earth Farmers Market in Chelsea! When it opened last year, it was immediately embraced by people in the area. You don’t think of West Chelsea as a food desert, but there was no farmers market in the neighborhood until this one. No wonder the neighbors love it so much. ~Karen Seiger, Markets of New York City
Chelsea Farmers Market opens on Saturday!
It begins with simple actions: footsteps into the field, eggs cracked in a bowl, a net dropped into the sea. In countless ways these days, local farmers and food makers are preparing for Opening Day of the Chelsea Farmers Market – Saturday, June 6th for the 2015 Season.
The market is located on 23rd Street, just east of 9th Avenue in Manhattan. Market hours are every Saturday, from 9AM to 5PM through December 19th, 2015.
Every week, the market will feature delicious foods, including fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, pasture-raised meats, amazing breads and baked goods, specialty foods, pickles, small batch beverages, and much muore. All of the vendors are local farmers and food makers, meaning they travel to market and back within the day.
In 2015, the theme of Down to Earth Farmers Markets is, “Every Food Has A Season.” Every week at the Chelsea Farmers Market, the vendors bring the freshest foods of the seasonal harvest. It is said that we never swim in the same river twice. Likewise, we never visit the same Chelsea Farmers Market from one week to another. As the seasons change, Down to Earth Markets’ recipe program will feature full market-sourced meals with something for vegetarians an omnivores alike. Customers are invited to explore the seasons through one dish or all.
The full season vendors include Alex’s Tomato Farm, American Pride Seafood, Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, Jersey Farm Produce, Meredith’s Country Bakery, OM Chapagne Tea, Orwasher’s Bakery, Pickel Licious, and Roots to River Farm.
Day vendors to appear on a rotating basis include: Brooklyn Oenology, Calcutta Kitchens, Compost, Demi Olive Oil, Grown in Brooklyn, LizBeth’s Dessert Boutique, Ovenly, Simple Eats with Chef T, Van Brunt Stillhouse and more.
Visit the Chelsea Farmers Market Every Saturday, 9AM – 5PM on the north side of 23rd Street, just east of 9th Avenue, next to the SVA theater.
