Pressed Glass Square Cake Plate from Affordable Antiques at the Astoria Flea
There are few things I like more in the world than cake, except maybe more cake. So when I was at the Astoria Flea last Sunday, I noticed several beautiful cake stands in the vintage and antiques section of the market.
Bill and Sheila of Affordable Antiques have been selling in flea markets for decades. On their table were two beautiful pressed glass cake pedestals. The square one was the first to catch my eye because of it’s unusual shape and the cubist pattern on the top. I believe it is a Fostoria cake stand from the 1950’s. Can you imagine a perfect Betty Crocker yellow cake with pink frosting perched on top of this beauty?

I also loved the a more traditional round cake stand nearby. Sheila told me that it features the American pattern, and that it is probably mid-century. It had a sunburst facet in the middle, and much more detailed faceting around the edge, like sparkly glass lace. You can see scratches on the surface from knives cutting into generations of birthday cakes.

It was getting to be late in the afternoon, and I was heading home from the Astoria Flea, when I passed this striking, robin’s egg blue cake plate on under the TresorTrove tent. It is just the sweetest thing, and it belongs in only the coziest of kitchens. I cannot believe it was still there at the end of the day, but that means it might be there again this weekend! I already have a wonderful cake stand, but I might just have to snap this one up for my sister-in-law. (It would match her kitchen, and she makes AMAZING cakes!)
In my humble opinion, if anything deserves to be put on a beautiful pedestal, it’s cake. Enjoy hunting for vintage kitchenware on Sunday at the Astoria Flea at Kaufman Studios in Queens! Affordable Antiques will actually be at the Antiques Garage this Sunday on West 26th and 6th.
NOTE: It’s the penultimate weekend for the Antiques Garage, so go pay your respects!
