Weekend Market Picks: Asparagus Season Doesn’t Care About A Little Rain

The Asparagus Are Here!

The Asparagus Are Here!

I used to be in charge of making the asparagus soup at lunchtime when I was a little kid. I’d open the can of Campbell’s Cream of Asparagus Soup and pour it into a saucepan. And then I’d take fresh asparagus spears and cut them into small bits like the ones from the can, and I’d let them cook to perfection as the soup boiled. Finally, I’d ladle it into bowls and add a pad of fresh butter in the center of the soup. I’m pretty sure I saw that on Julia Child’s show, or maybe Captain Kangaroo, but regardless, it was delicious.

Today, I generally toss asparagus in a bowl of olive oil with a pinch of sea salt and broil it in the oven. This weekend, though, I think I’ll make cream of asparagus soup. But not from a can.

The forecast calls for a bit of chilly, wet weather (the Queens Night Market decided not to hold their event on Saturday night), but there are still plenty of wonderful markets to visit this weekend, rain or shine. And best of all, it’s Mother’s Day! So take Mom to pick out her own gift so she’ll know you spent a few coins on her for sure! And definitely pick up some lilacs and peonies for her in your nearest greenmarket.

Weekend Market Picks

Saturday, May 13, 2017

Brooklyn Bike Jumble: It’s a flea market for new and used bikes, bike parts, and bike equipment. Now that it’s time to get ready for summer biking season, this is the place to do it! 10AM – 4PM,  Old Stone House at Fifth Avenue and 4th Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn

Italian Charities of America Flea Market: Head over to Elmhurst for bargains galore! Like the treasures you find in a church bazaar, there’s no telling what sparkly baubles, unique decorative bits, and funky outfits you’ll find here. Handmade products will be available too. 9AM – 4PM, 83-10 Queens Boulevard, Elmhurst, Queens

Staten Island Mall Greenmarket: The greenmarket is open for the season! One of two farmers markets on all of Staten Island, this one has everything you need for a week of fresh, healthy eating, including honey, cheese, baked goods, fruits, vegetables, and grass-fed Angus beef. 8AM – 3PM, Staten Island Mall, Marsh Avenue & Ring Road (Commuter Lot Behind Macy’s), Staten Island

Vegan Shop Up – Come What May: When they say the food is going to be amazing, I can personally vouch for it: Risotto Burgers, Deli Sandwiches, Feta Cheese, Pepperoni, Seitan Sliders, Coconut Cream Tarts + Caramels. Plus vegan and cruelty free lipsticks, skincare, and Bloody Marys. 12PM – 5PM, Pine Box Rock Shop, 10 Grattan Street, Brooklyn

Saturday & Sunday, May 13 & 14, 2017

Artists & Fleas in Soho: OPENING WEEKEND! I am so excited about this new venue for Artists & Fleas. They put on outstanding, diverse, and exciting markets in New York and LA, and I think Soho residents and tourists will be thrilled to have this new market in their midst! They’re celebrating Mother’s Day at A&F in Brooklyn too! Open 7 days: Mon – Sat 10AM – 8PM, Sundays, 11AM – 8PM, 568 Broadway at Prince Street, Manhattan

FAD Market Spring: FAD stands for fashion, art, and design, and this market is back for a new season with 47 artists and designers of jewelry, apparel, bath and body care, tableware, and home furnishings. You can also enjoy artisanal drinks and snacks. Plus, take advantage and visit the Brooklyn Historical Society’s exhibits too. 11AM – 6PM, Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn

Mad. Sq. Eats: I’m very glad this outdoor food market is back because it’s just a couple of blocks from my office. It’s such a great place to go for lunch or to meet friends after work. My secret is to go at off hours to avoid the crazy crowds. I don’t know where to start, but it will either be Bar Suzette, Coney Shack, or Bolivian Llama Party. Open Mon – Fri through June 9th, 11AM – 9PM, Worth Square – 5th Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets, Manhattan

Mirabea Moroccan Dream Pop Up: Mirabea is a series of pop-ups featuring “a distinct selection of handcrafted design and home goods produced by master artisans and local brands from villages around the world. Through these experiences, we support the preservation of native crafts and time-honored techniques.” This event is focusing on Morocco, and it runs through Monday, May 15. Sounds like it’s going to be lush and beautiful. 10AM – 6PM, 10 Bond Street, entrance on Lafayette, Manhattan

Sunday, May 14, 2017

Hester Street Fair’s Seward Park Yard Sale: One person’s junk is often someone else’s treasure, as we all know! Seward Park neighbors on the Lower East side are cleaning out their closets, and we get to rifle through their drawers! Plus a kosher cookout from the Pickle Guys! 11AM – 2PM, Hester Street at Essex Street, Manhattan

Park Slope Sunday Farmers Market: This adorable community market is organized by Down To Earth Markets. It features fresh local produce, as well as a variety of artisanal prepared foods, such as biscuits, yogurt, sauses and dressings, as well as spirits, mead, and beer. This Sunday, they are also hosting Susie’s Senior Dogs, a wonderful group that protects older dogs and finds them forever homes. 10AM – 5PM, 4th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn
