Weekend Market Picks January 12 – 13, 2013 + Garlic from S&SO Farms

S and S O Produce Farms Garlic

These plump garlic bulbs from S & S O Produce Farms are wonderful, classic seasoning. But it almost seems a shame not to roast them and appreciate their own distinctly delightful qualities. Try this roasted garlic recipe from the Pioneer Woman on bread from a farmers market for dinner this weekend!

Believe it or not, this is supposed to be the dead of winter. Wednesday I went out without my coat. Now it’s pouring rain. But fiddle-dee-dee to all of that because it’s the weekend!

Weekend Market Picks:

Essex Street Market: This market is a pillar of the neighborhood and culinary destination. Cheeses, fresh bread, fishmongers, a butcher, produce and so much more fill the spaces in this historic market. Fort Greene Greenmarket: In addition to the beautiful array of seasonal produce, dairy, cheese, breads, seafood and more, there will be a cooking demo by Chef Jess Mattheus of Hearth & Table Catering. And bring your Christmas tree to be mulched in Fort Greene Park! 8AM – 4PM. Washington Park between DeKalb & Willoughby Streets, Brooklyn

MulchFest TreeCycle: No, not a market, but a very important event! Your tree graced your home for the holidays, and now you can pay back the favor by returning its nutrients to a park in NYC!  10AM – 2PM, Check the website for locations throughout the five boroughs!

Sunday, January 13, 2013

Greenflea: The Greenflea features a selection of vendors outside and also inside this Upper West Side school. Walk through the schoolyard and into hallways and cafeteria to find vintage treasures and handmade local products. 10AM – 5:30PM, Columbus Avenue between W. 76 & 77 Streets, Manhattan

See you at the markets! And let me know if you roast some garlic this weekend.
