Weekend Market Picks June 15 & 16, 2013: Summer Strawberries

Strawberries 2013

I was recently chastised, and deservedly so, by my favorite Greenmarket manager, who shall go unnamed, for not having tried seasonal strawberries yet. “They’ve been out for three weeks – you should know that!” Right she was. And here they are. Sweet, delicious and juicy.

Rhubarb is out now too. So I want to see you all making pies and muffins and such with one of nature’s finest combinations.

I want to let you know about the Supply Good Market at 144 Newbury Street in Boston this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) to benefit the victims of the Marathon bombing. Many of New York’s finest artisans, designers and food purveyors are participating in this event by donating products for the cause.

Weekend Market Picks

Saturday, June 15, 2013:

Stoop Sale: I’ve not been to this event, but it looks like a huge, awesome… stoop sale! One person’s junk is another one’s treasure, so pop over and have at it. It looks like you can bring your own junk treasures to contribute. Noon – 6PM, Merchant’s House Museum, 29 East 4th St., Manhattan

Vegan Shop Up:  Another awesome food and artisan market event for vegans and vegetarians! Check out the fantastic array of safe and delicious foods, mostly sweet treats, as well as some fantastic handmade hats, clothing and skincare products. 12PM – 6PM, Pine Box Rock Shop at 12 Grattan St., Bushwich, Brooklyn

Saturday & Sunday, June 15 & 16, 2013

Crafts at Lincoln Center: It’s the second weekend of this outstanding and large outdoor craft market – almost 400 juried vendors from across the country are underneath the tents at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Don’t miss it! 12PM – 9PM Saturday, 10AM to 9PM Sunday; 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, Manhattan

Better Than Jam Pop Up on Governor’s Island: The New York Etsy Street Team and Better Than Jam Coop have opened up their summertime pop up on Governors Island. They have transformed a former officer’s mansion into a magical, handmade wonderland. Take the ferry to Governor’s Island and buy all souvenirs you will ever need! 10AM – 5PM, Governor’s Island

*NEW! LIC Flea Market: A brand new market in Long Island City debuts this weekend! It is a food, artisan and flea market in an exciting part of the city. LIC is becoming a happening place, and a market will help move that process along. This market is getting some nice buzz, so go check it out. You can tell your kids that you were there on Opening Weekend! 10AM – 6PM, corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street, Long Island City, Queens

Sunday, June 16, 2013

7th Heaven Street Fair: This fair offers the opportunity for the Park Slope neighborhood to open its arms and fully enjoy a street fair, only with artisanal food and fine crafters. Rather than jamming the streets and disrupting traffic with a typical fair, this market features a wonderful group of local emerging artisans and designers. 12PM – 6PM, 7th Ave. from Flatbush to 18th St., Brooklyn

*NEW! The Free Marketplace: They’re advertising “Artisan Goods, Live Music, and Family Fun,” so it sounds like a good thing to me! I get the feeling from their website that there is more to it than that, including community interactions and a “supply and demand” structure around the market sales. I love innovation, so let’s support this endeavor! This is the first of at least 4 upcoming events. 11AM – 5PM, FAB at Putnam Triangle (Fulton and Grand), Brooklyn

Monday, June 17 – Sunday, June 23, 2013

ID Pop Shop: The Independent Designer Pop Up is opening for another show on June 17th – 23. It is also their second anniversary, which they will be celebrating with a reception on Wednesday, June 19th. Pop into this unique designer event to pick up fine jewelry, clothing and more for summer! Inside Chelsea Market, 75 9th Ave., Manhattan

Here’s to staving of Sunday’s rain till evening!
