Raisins – they’re more exciting than you may think. Last weekend I discovered Little Wrinkles, raisins made from one ingredient only: grapes. The brainchild of two professional chefs, Stephanie Venetsky and Jose Alba, who now work at a private elementary school, Little Wrinkles raisins are packed with flavor.
In an effort to provide snacks that were healthy and appealing to the students, Stephanie and Jose decided to try making their own raisins. The results were so popular that they have launched a new raisin business!
I was so surprised at the flavor punch in a raisin that is made with care and not just dehydrated to death. Each different grape variety they use tastes completely distinct. You only need about 5 of the huge, sweet red raisins to make a satisfying snack. The musky raisins made from muscat grapes taste like the earth and vines from which they came. Their other raising varieties include golden, black and gold. They also rum raisins (great with vanilla ice cream), chocolate covered raisins, candied ginger and trail mix.
You can find Little Wrinkles on Sundays at the Fulton Stall Market in the South Street Seaport.
