Weekend Market Picks May 23 & 24, 2015: Six Season Openings and Peony Season

Peonies from Dutch Mill Gardents in the Greenmarkets

Peonies from Dutchnill Garden in the Greenmarkets

I try not to play favorites, except for peonies. They are my very favorite flower. I love the way they smell, I love their soft, translucent leaves that are still quite resistant. I love their perfectly round buds that eventually pop open to reveal a soft silhouette with cool yellow pollen inside, or sometimes a bright streak of pink in an otherwise perfectly white flower, like the ones from Dutchmill Garden in the Greenmarkets.

It’s peak peony season now, and several vendors have them in the Greenmarkets around town. They are absolutely glories, so make sure you pick up a bunch to take home. And when you do, clip the stems and change the water every day to make your peonies last as long as possible.

Enjoy!
