Weekend Market Picks May 25 & 26, 2013 + Bugged Out!

P1000226

The 17 year cicadas have arrived in Staten Island already. So what better time to write about our good friends at Bugged Out?

Graphic Designer and Architect Dina Lerman and her partner Gerd are the team behind the charming garden creatures and produce that appear on totes, tees, hoodies and onesies. Bugged Out has two recent additions to their Do Not Bug Me Collection, both New York denizens: a hungry rat and a self-righteous pigeon. If truly love New York, you’ll get the magic of these characters.

You can shop with Bugged Out on Etsy or meet them in person Friday – Sunday almost every weekend at St. Anthony’s Market on Houston and Sullivan. They will also be at the upcoming Crafts in Chelsea (June 1, 2013) and in the Etsy shop at Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park (June 5 – August 10, 2013). Follow Bugged Out on Facebook for all their updates and events!

Now I know it’s not supposed to be a great weekend for being outside, but you really never know what’s going to happen with the weather. And frankly, some of the best times to be had in New York can be had when everyone else is inside.

Oklahoma Tornado Fundraiser: Before we head out for the weekend, please take a minute and contribute whatever you can to the New York food communities efforts to raise funds for the tornado victims in Oklahoma.

Weekend Market Picks

Morningside Park Farmers Market: It’s opening day for the Down to Earth farmers market in Morningside Park! If you’ve never been to one of their markets, definitely go check this one out. They feature regional produce alongside locally made prepared food products. 9AM – 5PM, 110th St & Manhattan Ave., Manhattan

Saturday& Sunday, May 25 & 26, 2013 (* and some on Monday too)

The Market NYC: At home in the former Circle in the Square theater, the Market NYC is a collection of semi-permanent designer boutiques. You’ll find great t-shirts, jewelry, fashion, and some awesome décor items here.  11AM – 9PM Saturdays; 12PM-8PM Sundays, 159 Bleecker St. between Thompson and Sullivan Sts., Manhattan

Antiques Garage: If the rain really gets you down, come hang out in the cool shade of the Antiques Garage. This flea and antiques market is a classic.  9AM – 5PM, 112 West 25th St. between 6th & 7th Aves., Manhattan

Artists & Fleas: This artisan and flea market is very cool not only because of its impressive array of local designers and vintage dealers, but also because it’s indoors in Williamsburg. Their current pop-up in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market is open through the weekend. Chelsea Market Pop-Up, 10AM-7PM, Chelsea Market, 75 9th Ave., Manhattan; Williamsburg, 70 North 7th St., 10AM – 7PM, Brooklyn

*Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit: I believe this is the 82nd year for this art market, set in the streets of Greenwich Village. I love it for its place in the history of the Village, and also for the fabulous artists who show their work right there on the sidewalk. WSOAE runs for three weekends, including Memorial Day. 12PM – 6PM, University Pl. between East 12th and West 3rd St., Manhattan

*Dance Africa 2013 Outdoor Bazaar: This rich and colorful 3-day market features over 300 vendors from around the world! The theme is Africa and the Diaspora, with African, Caribbean and African-American handmade wares, food and performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.  Sat 12PM – 10PM, Sun & Mon 12PM – 8PM, BAM, Lafayette Ave. & Ashland Pl., Brooklyn

Sunday, May 26, 2013

East Williamsburg Cooper Park Farmers Market: OPENING DAY! Empanadas, pot pies, cupcakes, pickles and produce! This is a sweet little market that serves the local community. Check it out! 11AM – 4PM, Cooper Park on Maspeth Ave. at Olive St., Brooklyn
