Weekend Market Picks – October 26, 27 & 28, 2012

Two weeks ago, we went to the very first Gowanus Girls Indie Design + Food Mart, and we’re going back for more this Saturday!

The Gowanus Girls market features crafts, designs and food made by women. To be clear, guys are welcome to come and enjoy the market too. It takes place in the enchanting Gowanus Grove, “a little slice of paradise in the middle of industrial Brooklyn.” Sure enough, we came to the canal and saw the twinkly lights and sweet lanterns hanging from the branches of the tall birch trees. The colorful balloons were a sure sign that we were on the right course to get to the market.

The vendors set up beneath the trees, and it’s another great collection this weekend. I was familiar with many of the vendors who were at the first event, but there were plenty whom I met for the first time. The crafts are very high quality, and there are plenty of artisanal food vendors too. Kids are welcome to come, play, dance and participate in all the activities planned for them. The market is truly lovely, and we are looking forward to visiting this sweet spot along the canal again, which, by the way is looking better all the time.

Halloween Weekend Market Picks! Keep your eye on our Frankenstorm, but don’t let it keep you from these fabulous market events:

Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 26, 27 & 28

Holiday Shops at Bryant Park: You read that right! The crystal shops in Bryant Park are opening on Friday to kickstart the holiday season! I know it feels crazy early, but I do love this market, and I am very glad to welcome everyone back for the season! See website for details

Independent Designer Pop Shop at Chelsea Market: ID Pop Shop has popped up for a brief week in Chelsea Market! They are open through Sunday with 23 of New York’s finest indie designers. Get a serious jump on your holiday shopping for the people you like the best. Find fashion, jewelry, fine handbags, all in a beautiful, airy space. 10:30AM – 7:30PM, Event Space inside Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue, Manhattan

UrbanSpace Meatpacking Market: Well, this is the final weekend at this pretty market underneath the High Line. I am sad to see it go because I have enjoyed strolling on the wooden planks, grabbing a waffle (no dinges – I’m a purist) and looking at all the beautiful merchandise. The selection of jewelry has been outstanding, and there are many other great vendors there. So stop by this weekend and do some early holiday shopping! 11AM – 10PM, 860 Washington Street at 13th Street, Manhattan

Saturday, October 27, 2012

East 67th Street Market: It looks like this weekend is the 33rd anniversary for this rich flea and farmers market on the Upper East Side. I really like this market because it’s cozy and yet filled with treasures. It may be time for the lady who sells only nothing but cashmere sweaters to set up shop. There is high-end vintage jewelry that will make you drool. And then there’s the fellow who will change your watch batteries. If you’ve never been, go explore this weekend, and then go back again! 6AM – 5PM, in PS 183, East 66th and East 67th Streets between 1st and York Avenues, Manhattan

Gowanus Girls Indie Design + Food Mart: See above for details. Noon till Sundown, 400 Carroll Street, between Bond and Nevins, Brooklyn

Queens County Market: It’s time again for this monthly local food pop-up market in Astoria. The mission of this market is “to connect Queens communities with local food businesses by providing a marketplace for producers to sell their goods and expand their distribution into Queens.” I’d say they’re doing a great job, but definitely go see for yourself! 12PM – 4PM, Sac’s Place, 2541 Broadway at 29 St. Astoria, Queens

Sunday, October 28, 2012

Lower East Side Pickle Day: If ever there was the right place for Pickle Day, it’s the Lower East Side, where pickles have been a staple for over 100 years. There are at least 12 pickle vendors and 29 other kinds of food vendors, plus shopping and music. They’re also having a Halloween costume contest, and the prizes include chocolates from Roni-Sue’s Chocolates, home of the Pickle Truffle. You’ve gotta eat it to believe it!  Noon – 5PM, along three blocks on Orchard Street, from Delancey to E. Houston, Manhattan

Jackson Heights Greenmarket & Harvest Festival: I love the farmers market in Jackson Heights not only because it is a larger market in a pretty location, but also because it is a great place to shop with people from all over the world, from India to the Caribbean and beyond. It is not a bad place to ask a stranger for a recipe or find a huge variety of hot peppers. Sunday is also the Harvest Festival, which includes face painting for kids, fall food tastings and a contest to guess the weight of the giant pumpkin that will be under the GrowNYC Info tent! 8AM – 3PM, 34th Ave. at 77th St., Queens

Saturday is also the final Flea Market at PS 175 (on 135th St between 7th & Lennox). And this Saturday & Sunday is opening weekend for the new Williamsburg East Side Flea Market at PS 132 (Manhattan Avenue at Metropolitan Avenue). Let me know if you go!

For my friends in Boston, I have to give a huge shout out to the SoWa Market of the Living Dead! 130 vendors, 17 food trucks, plus magic and a costume contest! These people know how to do Halloween in a market! It’s also their last market of the year… 500 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA
