Weekend Market Picks, September 1 & 2, 2012 + D.U.O. Gear

He says he only started painting recently, but I have a feeling that he’s had it in him his whole life. So when you step into his T-shirt boutique/art gallery in the market, plan on spending some time talking with Irixx and learning about what you are seeing. He makes art, reminiscent of Keith Haring with a strong narrative component. He makes T-shirts, both graphic designs and one-of-a-kind, handpainted ones. He is a poet – you can read his thoughts in words and images on any blank space in his shop: a chair, a trash can, the band around a little hat. He even creates art on the bags he puts your purchases in.

Have a look at the images to give you an idea of the diversity of Irixx’s talents and stories. And then go meet him in person at The Market NYC (details below).

Weekend Market Picks! It’s a bit of a funky weekend with so many New Yorkers out of town. So I thought I’d choose the Lower Manhattan cluster of markets, as well as a Queens Greenmarket with some fun activities on Saturday:

Saturday, September 1, 2012

Socrates Sculpture Park Greenmarket: In Queens, this neighborhood market has 8 outstanding food vendors, including honey, bread, meats and specialty Mexican herbs. The Kids’ Cooking Class will be teaching how to make watermelon gazpacho! They will be giving out reusable market bags, and they have a Frequent Shoppers Club. Check it out! 8AM – 4PM, Vernon Blvd & Broadway, Queens

Saturday & Sunday, September 1 & 2, 2012

Antiques Garage: If you’re looking for interesting objects to add some pizazz to your apartment for the fall, this is the place to do it. Two floors of a parking garage in Chelsea are dedicated to classic antiques, including furniture, art, books, prints, jewelry, clothing, and many more things you will want to discover for yourself. 9AM – 5PM, 112 West 25th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, Manhattan

Pompeii Artisan and Flea Market: Everyone loves Bleecker Street, either for what it was back in the day (nightclubs, artists, writers), or for what it is today (shopping, food, history). Regardless of what takes you to this famous street, stop and look through this great little sidewalk market next to Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Keep an eye out for great jewelry, Bakelite, soaps, hats, and other unusual vintage and handmade items. 11AM – 6PM, Bleecker Street between Carmine & Leroy Streets, Manhattan

Urbanspace Meatpacking Market *Grand Opening*: From the organizers of the Union Square and Columbus Circle Holiday Markets and the Dekalb Market comes a brand new artisan and food market in the Meatpacking District. They have assembled a wonderful group of 62 vendors in a lot adjacent to the Highline Park, and I can’t wait to see it! This market will be open 7 days a week through October. 11AM – 10PM, Washington and 13th Streets, Manhattan

The Market NYC: The Market NYC, also known as the Young Designers Market, continues its long history as an incubator for fledgling design companies in a large, bright space on Bleecker Street in the heart of the Village. They are open Wednesday – Sunday. Go meet Irixx and many other innovative and inspiring designers of fashion, decor, and more. 12PM – 9PM, 159 Bleecker Street, Manhattan

St. Anthony’s Market: Another great Lower Manhattan market that you probably walked past a million times. If you haven’t stopped recently, check it out this weekend. You’ll find jewelry, accessories, fair trade clothing, cute kids clothing, and more! 10AM – 8PM, West Houston Street at Sullivan Street, Manhattan

Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit: This fantastic outdoor art market is back for two weekends! Stroll through the impressive array of fine art, sculpture and craft artists in the Village around Washington Square and meet the artists in person. This art market was founded in 1931 by Jackson Pollack and Willem DeKooning. University Place between East 12th and West 3rd Street, Manhattan

Have a lovely, relaxing Labor Day Weekend in the city or wherever you may be!
